Our History
In 2014, CARES Clarksdale was officially incorporated as a nonprofit, driven by a vision to improve the lives of animals in our community. One year later, in 2015, we assumed responsibility for the city-run animal shelter—at a time when conditions were at an all-time low. Recognizing an urgent need for change, we began with ambitious plans for a new building but remained focused on the daily needs of the shelter animals. By partnering with city officials, local veterinarians, donors, and passionate volunteers, we laid the groundwork for a sustainable future that would help countless animals thrive.
Early Milestones (2015–2016)
Reduced Unnecessary Euthanasia
One of our first priorities was to dramatically lower euthanasia rates, centering our efforts on better day-to-day care and accessible veterinary treatment.Foster Program & Transports
We recruited local families to foster dogs—especially those awaiting transport—so they didn’t have to remain in the shelter. These transports helped more than 100 dogs find loving homes in other parts of the country.Community Events
To boost awareness and adoptions, we launched new initiatives like Paws and Pumpkins and Santa Paws.Enhanced Outreach
We unveiled a new website, refreshed our Facebook page, and initiated second-Saturday adoption events at Oxford Hollywood Feed to increase public engagement.A Tail of Togetherness
Our redesigned logo featured the motto “A Tail of Togetherness,” symbolizing unity across Clarksdale for the greater good.Guardian Angel Grant
Through our first spay/neuter grant from the Guardian Angel Fund, we were able to ensure that every adopted animal left our shelter already altered—a first in Clarksdale’s history, helping reduce stray populations.Generous Funding & Dedicated Volunteers
Supporters provided vital funding for vaccinations, medical care for sick animals, and spay/neuter procedures. Meanwhile, our amazing volunteers contributed thousands of hours, ensuring each animal received hands-on care and attention.
A New Era Begins (2017)
With continued support and grants, we moved into our state-of-the-art facility in 2017, a building 14 times larger than our original shelter. This monumental shift allowed us to:
Enhance Shelter Conditions
Indoors replaced tarps and makeshift spaces, providing every animal with a safe, comfortable environment.Medical Advancements
Collaborations with local veterinarians and the Mississippi State Veterinary School provided on-site care, further supporting our spay/neuter initiatives.Infrastructure & Technology
New software streamlined adoption processes, while updated accounting systems ensured donations were properly allocated.
Growing Forward
Since then, we’ve focused on continuous improvement. Staff and volunteers regularly receive training to create a welcoming shelter experience for animals and visitors alike. Board members attend national shelter expos at their own expense to stay on top of best practices. Through brochures, handouts, and partnerships with local schools, we continue spreading the message of humane education and responsible pet ownership.
Every step of our journey reflects the belief that every animal deserves a chance at a healthy, happy life. From reducing euthanasia rates and modernizing facilities to expanding programs and nurturing community ties, CARES Clarksdale remains steadfast in raising the bar for animal welfare in our region—and we’re only getting started.
