Healthy Paws Clarksdale: Pioneering Affordable Veterinary Care in the Mississippi Delta

Healthy Paws Clarksdale was founded in 2024 by Executive Director Brittany Gault, in collaboration with CARES Clarksdale, and officially launched in January of 2025. As the pilot location of a regional initiative dedicated to reshaping veterinary access in low-income and underserved communities, our clinic is situated in the heart of the rural Delta, where “veterinary deserts” have limited options for affordable pet care. Through innovative programs, compassionate service, and partner-driven support, we’re ensuring that every pet owner—regardless of financial means—can access the quality care their animals deserve. Together, we’re paving the way for a healthier future for pets and families in the Mississippi Delta and beyond.

In the Mississippi Delta, nearly 40% of residents live below the poverty line, making it one of the most economically challenged regions in the country. For many families, even routine vet visits become unattainable luxuries, and without accessible, affordable care, animals often go unvaccinated, unaltered, and untreated for preventable conditions. As a result, shelters face overcrowding, euthanasia rates climb, and stray populations increase—fueling a cycle of hardship for pets and people alike. However, research from Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine shows that when low-cost spay/neuter and preventive services are made available, communities can see a dramatic drop—up to 70–90%—in euthanasia and stray populations.
